Welcome to the webpages of the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the Institute of Pre- and Protohistory and Mediaeval Archaeology, University of Tübingen.

The Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology is housed in the Institute of Pre- and Protohistory of the University of Tübingen. The Institute of Prehistory was founded by R.R. Schmidt in 1921. Our department conducts field research world-wide and seeks to incorporate fieldwork into training of students. The collections of the department include diverse archaeological finds, fossil hominid material, ethnographic finds, as well as a wide range of photographic and written documentation from our field projects. The department`s collections are perhaps best known for the ivory statuettes from Vogelherd. These magnificent finds are some of the oldest examples of Paleolithic art.
